Privacy Policy
Last updated: 23 October 2026
- We collect what we need to plan your dinners: your answers (who you cook for, allergies, foods you skip, your week, budget and store) and the plans we make.
- Your answers are sent to OpenAI to write your plan. They're never used to train AI models.
- No ads. We never sell your data or track you across other apps and websites.
- An account is optional. If you make one, you can delete it and its data in the app at any time.
Who we are
Cookingly is a meal-planning app for iPhone. In this policy, "Cookingly", "we" and "us" mean the developer of the app, Cookingly Technologies, Nigeria. Questions about privacy: support@cookingly.app.
What we collect and why
Your answers
When you set up Cookingly, you tell us how many adults and children you cook for (and the children's ages, not their names), any allergies, foods you or your family won't eat, which nights you cook, have leftovers or take off, how much hands-on time you want, your cookware, weekly budget and store, any meals you'd like or had recently, and how you heard about Cookingly. We use this only to plan your dinners and grocery list.
Allergies and foods to avoid can say something about health or beliefs. We treat them carefully: they're used only to keep those foods out of your plan, they're never used for advertising, and they're never sent to our analytics service.
Your plans and how they went
The weekly plans we make, the swaps you ask for, which dinners you've cooked, your ratings ("Loved it", "Don't make this again") and who liked them. This lets Cookingly avoid repeats, bring back favourites and never suggest a dish you rated "Don't make this again".
A random device id and your region
The app creates a random id for your phone (not linked to your name) and reads your phone's region setting to choose the currency and measurements. We use these to limit how many plans one phone or network can request each day (to keep the service affordable and stop abuse), and to keep each plan with the phone that asked for it. For these limits our server also sees your network (IP) address; it's kept for 2 days.
Your email address (only if you make an account)
If you save your week to an account, we store your email address so we can send you a sign-in code and, if you start a free trial, one reminder email 2 days before it ends. We don't send marketing emails.
On our website: the waitlist and link counts
If you join the waitlist on cookingly.app/try, we store your email address, the post that brought you there (if the link said) and whether you were on an iPhone. We use it only to send you one email when Cookingly is in the App Store; email support@cookingly.app to be taken off. That page also counts, without any name, email, IP address or cookie, when it's opened and when "Try the beta" is tapped, and which post the link came from, so we can see which posts help people.
How the app is used
To see which screens work and where people get stuck, the app sends anonymous usage events: which screens were opened, buttons such as "Get my week" or "Swap", whether a plan was ready or failed and how long it took, your household size and budget, how you heard about us, which paywall version you saw, and basic device information (phone model, iOS version, language). These events are linked to the random device id, or to your account's id if you sign in. They never include your allergies, foods you avoid, anything you typed, your name or your email address.
Purchases
Subscriptions are bought and managed through your Apple account. Apple handles your payment details; we never see them. We only learn whether your subscription or free trial is active, when it renews or ends, and whether it will renew. RevenueCat checks this for us with Apple, using a random id made by the app (not your name or email).
Notifications
If you allow notifications, your phone shows a reminder 2 days before your free trial ends. This reminder is scheduled on your phone itself.
Who helps us run Cookingly
We use a few trusted services. Each one processes your data only to provide its service to us.
| Service | What it does for us | What it receives | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Our server, database and sign-in | Your answers, plans, ratings, device id, account email, the account backup of your week, and waitlist emails | Germany (EU) |
| OpenAI | Writes your weekly plan and swap ideas | Your answers and past dinners and ratings (no name, email or account id) | United States |
| PostHog | Anonymous usage analytics | The usage events described above | United States |
| RevenueCat | Checks your Apple subscription and free trial, and runs our paywall tests | A random app user id, your purchase and trial status from Apple, and basic device details (model, iOS version, country) | United States |
| Resend | Sends our emails (sign-in codes, trial reminder) | Your email address and the email's content | United States |
| Apple | App Store, subscriptions, payments, notifications | What Apple needs to process your purchase | Worldwide |
OpenAI does not use data sent through its API to train its models, and may keep it for up to 30 days to detect abuse. If we add or change a service that receives your data, we'll update this page.
Some of these services are outside your country, including in the United States. Where the law requires it, we rely on the services' standard contractual safeguards for these transfers.
How long we keep it
- On your phone: your answers, current week and the last 8 weeks of dinners, until you delete the app or use "Start over".
- Plans on our server: each week's plan is kept for 21 days (so you can swap dinners), then deleted.
- Your account and its backup: until you delete your account.
- Daily request limits: 2 days.
- Waitlist emails: until we send the launch email, or until you ask us to remove yours.
- Usage analytics: up to 12 months.
- Server logs (errors and timings, no email addresses): a few days.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your account: in the app, open the You tab, then Delete my account. This deletes your account and its saved week right away. (It doesn't cancel an Apple subscription; do that in your iPhone's Settings, your name, Subscriptions.)
- Delete what's on your phone: delete the app.
- Notifications: turn them off any time in your iPhone's Settings.
- Ask us: to get a copy of your data, correct it, or delete data we hold about you (including usage analytics), email support@cookingly.app. We'll answer within 30 days. Depending on where you live (for example the UK, the EU or California), you may have further rights, including to complain to your data protection authority.
We don't sell or share your personal information for advertising, and we don't use it to build advertising profiles.
Children
Cookingly is for adults who plan meals. It isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information. Children's ages you give us are used only to size portions and suit the meals.
Security
Data is sent over encrypted connections. Your account data can only be read with your sign-in, and our server keys are kept off your phone. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will tell you if a breach affects you, as the law requires.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top and, for important changes, tell you in the app or by email.
